NSLL LEAGUE STRUCTURE
Newton South Little League now offers 4 Divisions.
The age of the player for the 2008 season is determined
based upon the player's age as of April 30, 2008
A Division:
This is a developmental division designed to teach fundamentals to beginning players.
- All registered players in first grade or ages 7-8 will be assigned to the A division, except for 8 year-olds who are placed in AA as described below.
AA Division:
This Division is a developmental league where we introduce live
pitching by players for the first time, but there is no base stealing.
- Registered players age 9 will be assigned to AA if not drafted into Majors or AAA (see below).
- Registered 8 year-olds who have completed at least one year of play in the A Division (or its equivalent elsewhere), may try out for this Division, and will be selected based on level of play as determined at tryouts. The intention is for AA to be available to 8 year-olds who are clearly ready to advance from coach pitch to kid pitch.
- Registered 10 year-olds who express a preference to play in AA.
AAA Division:
AAA is a Division for more senior and skilled players who were not drafted into the Majors, and is designed to offer a competitive experience comparable to the Majors. It will typically consist of 10-11 year-olds and the most skilled 9 year olds who will be selected by draft. AAA will consist of:
- All registered players age 12 who receive a waiver from Majors participation (see below).
- All registered players age 11 who are not drafted in the Majors.
- All registered 10 year-olds who are not drafted into Majors and who do not express a preference to play in AA. Subject to selection by draft, all registered 9 year-olds who attend at least one tryout session. For good cause, a player may be excused from tryouts with prior approval of the NSLL Player Agent.
- Any other registered player who played in AAA the previous spring season and has not been drafted to the Majors.
Majors:
This is the most competitive division and is designed for most senior and highly skilled players.
Registered players age 9-12 are eligible (9 year-old participation is expected to be uncommon).
- All registered players who played in the Majors the previous spring will remain in the Majors.
- All other registered 12 year-olds will play in the Majors and will be assigned to a team by draft, unless a waiver is requested by the players parent or legal guardian to enable the player to play in AAA, and is approved by the NSLL President and by the District Administrator as provided in LL Baseball Rules.
- All registered 12 year-olds who did not play in the Majors the previous spring are required to attend tryouts. All other players are selected for the Majors through the draft, and are eligible to be drafted only if they attend at least one tryout session. For good cause, a player may be excused from tryouts with approval of the NSLL Player Agent.
If you have any registration questions, please email our Player Agent Phil Levine at plevine@wellesley.edu
Please keep in mind the League can demand proof of age (an original birth certificate), and certainly will do so for any player involved in inter-league play (for example, the Williamsport Tournament team). We actively solicit our parents to act as coaches and managers. In keeping with the Little League mandatory policy, and with the practice of many other youth leagues in Newton, we require all board members, coaches and managers to undergo a CORI (criminal background check). Local Little Leagues are entirely volunteer organizations. Your willingness to exchange time and effort for your childs benefit and enjoyment is very important to the functioning of our league. You can indicate your interest in managing, coaching or helping the League in some other way by checking a box in the registration process. We value your contribution.
NOTE: you do not need to purchase the active.com membership in order to register for or to play in our League.
IMPORTANT: No child will be denied the opportunity to play for lack of financial resources. For more information, contact Phil Levine as above.
SPECIAL NOTE: AA, AAA and Major league teams must return uniform shirts at the end of the season.
